Bourbon Nosing Kit (Original) - Gift for bourbon lover

by Nose Your Bourbon

Do you roll your eyes when you read reviews that note "dark cherry, brown sugar, and leather," and think, there is NO WAY that someone is tasting all of that in their bourbon? I did too, until I realized that it was simply a lack of experience, and that I could train my nose to find the nuances in bourbon. Sensory scientists have proven that over 80% of what we taste comes from what we smell, and that's why I created these bourbon nosing kits. By simply training your nose to become more familiar with these aromas, you'll be able to more easily detect them in a glass of bourbon.

How it works:

  1. Pour some bourbon in a glass and swirl it around gently.
  2. Nose (smell) one of the elements, then nose your bourbon.
  3. Take a small sip and “chew” the bourbon around in your mouth for 5-10 seconds before swallowing.
  4. Nose the element and the bourbon again. The aromas present should be more amplified now.
  5. Take note of what aromas you find in the bourbon you’re nosing. If it smells sweet, can you get more specific? Maybe it’s more like vanilla, honey, or brown sugar. If it's spicy, is it a cinnamon spice or black pepper spice?
  6. Repeat the process with each element to see what other nuances you can find in your glass

Other nosing kits cost hundreds of dollars and use synthetic aromas made in a lab. These kits are made with the REAL ingredients for the most authentic aroma.

The elements in this kit represent the wood, grain, sweet, spice and fruit/floral categories commonly found in a bourbon tasting wheel. Includes 18 elements in screw top containers and instructions for how to get the most out of the kit, all held in a convenient travel case.

Elements included:

  • Vanilla (bean)
  • Caramel
  • Honey
  • Cocoa (powder)
  • Brown Sugar
  • Cherry (dried)
  • Tobacco (premium pipe tobacco)
  • Leather (100% genuine leather)

  • Clove
  • Black Pepper
  • Cinnamon
  • Mint (crushed leaves)
  • Peanut (powder)

I have yet to use the kit. I am saving it for a special trip coming up the end of this month. I will reach out and update this review once my bourbon friend and I have used the product.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Enjoy :)

Good nosing kit for competitive price

Nice introductory nosing with a good selection of aromas found in bourbon and rye whiskeys. All of the samples are very fresh, and they should last for a long time if you keep them sealed as per the instructions. I am so satisfied with the kit that I'm sending one to my sister for her birthday. I do, however, have a couple of nit-picking suggestions for improvement. First, the caramel sample would be easier to smell if two (instead of one) cube was provided. Second, I don't believe that the mint sample is necessary in the basis kit, as I've never sensed even a hint of mint in all of the straight bourbon and rye whiskeys I tasted. Perhaps a fruit sample, such as banana or even a citrus fruit, could be substituted.

Hey Charles! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review. I included the mint element as it's an aroma I commonly get on high rye mashbill ryes (MGP where it's 95% rye etc). James E Pepper, Smooth Ambler Old Scout Rye, Willett, Pinhook, Bulleit Rye, and Whistlepig to name a few. Give those a try and let me know if you find the mint note that I'm referring to. Cheers!

Great Kit

Ordered this kit as a birthday present for myself. Love having samples of items I typically don't have around the house to nose such as oak and tobacco. I have told a couple of my friend about this and highly recommend that they order one as well.

Happy birthday Jerry! So glad you're enjoying the kit, and I appreciate you helping spread the word. Cheers!

There's a straight up piece of leather on this kit. How many times has someone told you something smells like leather and you've been like "damn, wish I had some leather handy that wasn't my shoes"? Never again. Just open your kit.

Also, please be careful with the cinnamon and don't spill it everywhere like I did when I opened it. That stuff is overpowering.

The ingredients in the kit I ordered are fresh, and I am going to order more kits because I'm jealous of how good of a gift it is for others.

Thank you so much for the kind review! Haha, love the leather comment, it's so true. Really appreciate the support!
